The Selong Belanak Lifestyle: Why Residents Love Living Here

Investment returns are important. Legal structures matter. Market data is worth studying carefully. But at some point, any serious conversation about buying property in Selong Belanak has to address the most fundamental question: what is it actually like to live here? The answer, from the residents and part-time owners who spend time at Selong Selo and across Selong Belanak, is remarkably consistent. This is a place that changes the pace of your life, in the best possible way.

The Beach, Every Day

Selong Belanak Beach is not a weekend destination - it is a daily reality for people who live here. The drive to the water is minutes from most properties in the Selong Selo estate. The ocean is calm enough for swimming, beautiful enough for photographs every single afternoon, and backed by a gentle social scene of cafes, surf schools, and small restaurants that have grown up to serve the growing community. The beach faces south-west, which means sunsets here are a genuine event. On a clear evening, the light on the water is the kind of thing that makes people stop mid-sentence and reach for their phones. After a few weeks, you stop reaching for the phone. You just sit and watch.

Surfing, Wellness, and an Active Life

South Lombok is a surfing destination of international standing. The breaks in the region, from the beginner-friendly waves at Selong Belanak itself to the more advanced swells at nearby spots, attract surfers from around the world. There is a culture of early mornings, outdoor activity, and physical well-being that permeates the community. Yoga studios, wellness retreats, and healthy cafes have followed the surf culture in. The South Lombok lifestyle, particularly in Selong Belanak, has a strongly health-conscious, outdoors-oriented character that suits people who want to live actively and well.

A Genuine Community

One of the things that surprises people who move to Selong Belanak is how quickly they feel part of something. The expat and semi-expat community here is small enough that people know each other, look out for each other, and socialise genuinely, not in the performative way oflarger, more established expat enclaves. The local Sasak community is equally welcoming. The culture in South Lombok is warm, family-oriented, and proud, quite distinct from Bali's more Hinduised culture, and very much its own thing. Learning even a few words of Bahasa Indonesia goes a long way in building relationships here.

Practical Life: What You Need to Know

Healthcare in Selong Belanak is local, a clinic serves the community for everyday needs, and Mataram (Lombok's provincial capital) has hospitals around 90 minutes away. Most longer-term residents hold good international health insurance or get BPJS through their PT PMA and travel to Bali or Singapore for any serious medical needs. Schooling is limited locally, there is a small start up international school in Selong Belanak, in Kuta (approximately thirty minutes away) there are several larger schooling options including Anak Alam (which will be moving to Tampah, only 10 minutes away, in 2027) and Mandalika Intercultural School. Provisioning is increasingly comfortable. Kuta, just 30 minutes away, has a growing selection of supermarkets, pharmacies, and international brands. For specific imported goods Mataram, Praya or online shopping are the answer.

Selong Selo: A Home, Not Just a Property

When we designed and built the Selong Selo estate, we were thinking about this, about what it would feel like to live here, not just to visit. The landscaping, the communal spaces, the relationship with the surrounding landscape, the care taken with every detail, all of it was done with residents in mind as much as guests. If you are considering buying property in Selong Belanak, we encourage you to come and experience it first-hand. Our team will arrange a tour of the estate and give you a genuine feel for what life here looks like. We think you will love it. Get in touch to arrange your visit.
